Re-Surface: Marleen Sleeuwits

In what places do we actually spend most of our time and how do we relate to them? In the exhibition Re-Surface, Marleen Sleeuwits explores her fascination with suspended ceilings with which we are constantly surrounded on a daily basis. The material has a temporary and impersonal character and is quickly popularly labelled as ‘ugly’ or ‘cheap’. In this new series of works, she explores the relationship between original, replica and photography. The presentation in neon-coloured Plexiglas containers makes you feel like you are looking at relics from the future.

The second part of the exhibition features the work Interior no. 72 to 74, which stems from the cube-shaped installation Marleen made for New York’s Sous les Etoiles gallery in 2023. The installation meandered through the space and was plastered with burnt photo prints of concrete and mirrors, making the structures seem to run on indefinitely. A mirror substrate gives the series an alienating effect that makes the viewer relate between different dimensions.
