Event

29.04.2025

How does militarism seep into everyday life? In what ways do science and nature converge in the phenomenon of camouflage? These questions will be explored in depth during a conversation  between artist Lawrence James Bailey and guest speaker Professor Jane Tynan.

In his exhibition Bare Machine, Lawrence examines the relationship between humans and nature. Through textile and embroidery work, he portrays people caught between two worlds: still part of the wilderness and increasingly alienated from it.

Dr. Jane Tynan, Assistant Professor in Design History and Theory at VU Amsterdam, will expand on this theme by exploring camouflage as a striking intersection of humanity and nature. Her insights will offer political and historical context on the rise of militarism in modern life. Jane’s research sits at the crossroads of fashion, history, and politics, with a special focus on the symbolic power of uniforms.
